Our Story

2003
Student & Business Owner
In 2003, Johanna Zlenko moved to Santa Barbara. In her freshman year at school, she helped open a vintage shop called “The Closet”.

Within months, Johanna took over ownership of the fledgling business. She ran the shop in Santa Barbara while attending UCSB, later graduating with a BA in Global Studies in 2007.
2008
It takes Two
In 2008, The Closet opened a second location in Westlake Village, CA, about 60 miles south of Santa Barbara, in Ventura County. Around the same time, Taylor Lambert came on as a Sales Associate at the Santa Barbara shop. Taylor would go on to become an integral part of day-to-day operations, ultimately growing into her current role as COO.

2010
Relocated
In 2009 The Closet began doing business under the name “The Closet Trading Company™” and we moved our flagship location to the big leagues on State Street in Santa Barbara in 2010.
2011
Number Three
In 2011, in the midst of the Great Recession, we opened our third location in Santa Monica, CA. Located in a landmark building on historic Main Street, the new store flourished as economic uncertainty led a new generation of consumers to take an interest in luxury secondhand goods.

2013
The Hills
The shop in Westlake Village was relocated to the neighboring community of Agoura Hills, CA. The TCTC model proved effective in a quiet neighborhood shopping center in the suburbs and not just in tourist-driven destinations.
2016
Turning the Tide
The Closet Trading company leads the industry by becoming the first consignment or resale business that has been permitted to operate in any Westfield Property worldwide. Our fourth store opens at The Village at Westfield Topanga.
